چکیده

The globular cluster M15 has recently been found to host a possible central black hole with a mass of ∼2000 M⊙. A deep, high-resolution Chandra image failed to detect the “nucleus” of the cluster in X-rays. The upper limit on the X-ray luminosity (Lx ∼< 5.6×10 32 erg s−1) corresponds to a bolometric Eddington ratio of Lbol/LEdd ∼ < (2 − 4)×10−8. Combining this limit with an estimate of the electron density of the intracluster ionized plasma derived from pulsar dispersion measures, we show that the radiative efficiency of the accretion flow, if it accretes at the Bondi rate, must be much lower than that of a standard optically thick, geometrically thin disk. Subject headings: black hole physics — globular clusters: individual (M15) — X-rays: general

Globular clusters could harbor massive central black holes (BHs), just as galaxies do. So far, no unambiguous detection of a massive BH has been reported for any globular cluster. However, the dense core-collapsed cluster M15 seems to be a good candidate. I review the available photometric and kinematic data for this cluster. Both are consistent with a BH of mass M• ≈ 2000M⊙, although such a BH...

Production of intermediate-mass black holes in globular clusters

The discovery of numerous non-nuclear X-ray point sources with luminosities L . 10 erg s in several starburst galaxies has stimulated speculation about their nature and origin. The strong variability seen in several sources points to massive black holes as the central engines. If the flux is isotropic, the luminosities range up to <10 erg s, implying masses of M * 10 M( if the luminosity is sub...

Detection of IMBHs from microlensing in globular clusters

Aims. Globular clusters have been alternatively predicted to host intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) or nearly impossible to form and retain them in their centres. Over the last decade enough theoretical and observational evidence have accumulated to believe that many, if not all, galactic globular clusters host IMBHs in the centres, just like galaxies do. The well-established galactic bulge...

Is there an upper limit to black hole masses ?

We make a case for the existence for ultra-massive black holes (UMBHs) in the Universe, but argue that there exists a likely upper limit to black hole masses of the order of M ∼ 1010M⊙. We show that there are three strong lines of argument that predicate the existence of UMBHs: (i) expected as a natural extension of the observed black hole mass bulge luminosity relation, when extrapolated to th...

The star ingesting luminosity of intermediate mass black holes in globular clusters

The dynamics of stars in the inner regions of nearby globular clusters (GCs) such as M15 and G1 indicate the presence of central concentrated dark masses, and one would like to know whether these are indeed intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs). As the number of surrounding stars, and their motions, are roughly known, the capture rate can be estimated; the question then arises of whether the ap...
